Updates to the ACI 318-19 on the Strut-and-Tie Model Design

Stress flow in a deep beam
In this month issue of American Concrete Institute (ACI) Concrete International (May 2019), there is an interesting article (entitled “Shear in Discontinuity Regions”) regarding the upcoming changes in the ACI 318-19 Building Code.

The changes are introduced to address many of the concerns and inconsistencies in the current ACI 318-14 Code related to shear strength in D-regions. These changes are based on review of relevant literature, analysis of published test data, and an experimental program designed to evaluate the influence of diagonal tension on the strength of struts.

The changes should lead to more economical design of deep elements, such as footings and thick slabs, because the beneficial effect of steep strut angles counteracts the size effect.
